Plateaus are inevitable when training. However you can minimize how long you hit a plateau for by having a clear calendar for training. Training regimes need to be revised and changed periodically, rather than keeping to the same program for months on end. The maximum time you should spend doing one program is normally 8 weeks depending on the program/training goals and person.
If you train to improve performance (which involves all aspects of training from speed/agility/endurance/strength etc...) your body will change. Most people do not train for optimum performance and as a result the body does not adapt and improve.
In order to help achieve optimum performance, the body has to be stressed in all aspects of fitness:
• Endurance
• Hypertrophy (enlarging the muscle)
• Strength
• Power
• Speed/Agility/Quickness
Here is an example of how you can avoid plateaus and change your body constantly:
Endurance – 2 weeks
Hypertrophy – 6 weeks
Strength – 4 weeks
(This is an example and should not be used as a template for training. Consult a doctor or fitness professional before undertaking any fitness regime)
